Replantation surgery

Replantation means sowing an amputated body part back onto the body as well as rehabilitating all structures necessary for the body part’s functions (bones, tendons, nerves and skin tissue). The surgery also ensures blood circulation.

The Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin is a replantation centre.

Replantation is only possible under certain circumstances, when the proper first aid treatment of the amputated body part has been performed right away. Instructions on the

Treatment of Amputations at Place of Accident:

  • Find all the parts
  • Do not treat the amputation (neither by washing nor any kind of cleaning or disinfection)
  • Wrap the body part in a sterile gauze or clean cloth, then place it a water-proof plastic bag,
  • Place the plastic bag in another water-proof bag filled with cold water and ice-cubes (1:1 ratio). Seal both bags.
  • Attention: do not place the amputated body part directly on the ice, since that can cause freezer burn and destroy the chances of replantation.
