Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructing body surface after a trauma or tumour operation or for malformations falls under the domain of plastic reconstructive surgery. The Centre primarily focuses on reconstruction of skin tissue, muscles, tendons and peripheral nerves. Microsurgergical and endoscopic techniques are essential to the complex processes. We specialise in surgery of the face / head and neck area, chest and abdominal wall, the female breast and extremities.

Patients with scars and defects in the face and neck area do not only have functional difficulties, they also suffer from cosmetic complications that may affect them psychologically and socially. Corrective surgery is therefore extremely important to our patients, and covers scarring of the scalp which can be successfully treated, e.g., with hair transplants and tissue expanders. Large defect wounds to the chest and abdominal wall often resulting from surgical procedures (cardiac and pulmonary operations) must be closed with flap plasty techniques.

The clinic works with breast centres to reconstruct the female breast after a tumour operation. These procedures also involve microsurgical tissue transplantation from the stomach or other areas of the body.

The urology and neuro-urology departments are also an essential part of the surgical team helping (woman to man) transsexual patients adapt their appearance to the sex they feel they are.

Obesity operations are performed by plastic surgeons, enabling weight loss by removing excess skin and fat in a number of body lift operations. Their new body not only improves patients’ health, it also increases their quality of life.

Various skin tissue defects are treated in Extremity Surgery, such as circulation disorders, venous ulcers and diabetic neuropathies of the foot. The latter especially can lead to amputation in chronically ill patients. The goal of plastic surgery here is to conserve the damaged extremities using a variety of skin grafting procedures.
