Unit for Reconstructive Surgery in Brachial Plexus Injuries, Tetraplegia and Cerebral Disorders

The Unit for reconstructive Surgery in Brachial Plexus injuries, Tetraplegia and cerebral Disorders was established in 2010 to provide a specialized institution under the direction of Dr. Richarda Böttcher.  Patients with severe injuries of nerves, with tetraplegia and with palsies linked to brain damage find a qualified team for consultation and treatment. Also combined nerve injuries, peroneal palsy or sequelae of compartment syndrome such as Volkmann contracture are treated here.

Brachial Plexus Injuries

In early treatment results of reconstructive microsurgery could be improved dramatically within the last 20 years. International results show a clear advantage for patients, who are operated within the first months after injury. In consequence our aim is to examine and treat these injuries as early as possible. The unit at the ukb has a clear algorithm for diagnostic and treatment as a base for daily work. The surgery includes direct repair, nerve transplants and transfers, free neurovascular muscle transplants and late reconstruction including muscle transfers.

Functional hand reconstruction in tetraplegia

A reconstructed key grip between the thumb and the index finger improves independence of tetraplegic patients dramatically. The possibility to perform self catheterism, to perform domestic and occupational work and an advanced transfer is able to change life. Our experience with nearly 30 patients showed good results in all cases. We didn't observe any loss of function. After first consultation patients are also informed by a patient with reconstructed hand function as a peer counselor.

Spastic disorders

Children and adults with cerebral palsies often suffer especially from the spastic disorders, leaving to loss of function, severe malposition ad pain. In several cases only little surgical procedures are needed to improve function.
