When compared internationally, the German rescue services are very good and the BG clinics a very important part of the system. Rescue helicopters are either stationed directly in each establishment or a close cooperation exists with the operators of rescue helicopters. In most clinics the heliport is situated directly on the roof, this shortens transportation and no unnecessary time is lost. In 2009, helicopters stationed at the clinics were deployed some 7,200 times and emergency ambulances stationed at the clinics were deployed 14,863 times.

55 percent of the beds set aside for severe burns injuries in Germany can be found in BG clinics. When a patient is admitted with severe burns, one thing is paramount: survival. Alongside that, even if maintenance of the vital functions is the primary objective, consideration is given to the further treatment measures intended to lead to rehabilitation. For example, one of these measures is to reconstruct a severely burnt face in as far as possible.

Treatment Centres for Spinal Cord Injuries
62 percent of the beds set aside for spinal cord injuries in Germany can be found in BG clinics. Every year, some 1,200 newly injured patients are cared for in the treatment centres for spinal cord injuries at BG clinics. The ratio between paralysis affecting all four limbs (tetraplegics) and paralysis affecting either both arms or both legs (paraplegics) is more or less constant at two to three. The most common cause of such injuries is work and commuting accidents. Nearly a third is triggered by disease; fewer are a result of sport-related accidents or other causes.
