Centre of medical excellence in central Germany
The re-opening of the BG Clinic Bergmannstrost in 1997 was an enrichment not only for the state of Saxony-Anhalt, but also for Saxony, Thuringia and the Harz. 452 beds in nine specialist departments with a focus on trauma surgery, spinal cord injuries, burns injuries and the interdisciplinary early rehabilitation make their mark. More than 140 doctors and a nursing staff of over 500 care for the patients. Since the re-opening, bed occupancy has increased year on year. In 2005, even individual clinics were at full capacity.

Modern trauma centre in the East
Bergmannstrost is taking a leading position in polytrauma management . By integrating a multi-line CT scanner in one of the shock rooms, diagnostic and life-saving therapeutic measures can be performed simultaneously, this enables valuable time to be saved prior to the surgical care of patients.

National burns unit
The Burns Unit in south-eastern Germany is one of only three in the new federal states. It provides comprehensive services for the treatment of severe burns injuries, the entire range of rapid primary care including intensive care and the reconstruction of burns injuries. This includes eight beds with intensive monitoring and state-of-the-art technology. After primary care, a cooperation agreement with the rehabilitation clinic in Bad Klosterlausnitz guarantees each patient the best possible approach for further care and rehabilitation. A sign of excellence: on average after only 17 days of intensive treatment patients can be discharged for rehab. The figures speak for themselves: in 2005, 98 patients were cared for in the department, they had an average of 22.6% burns and at 6.6 the ABSI score was very high. "Therefore, in terms of the severity of burns, Bergmannstrost is one of the third largest clinics in Germany", said Dr. Michael Steen, Director of the Department of Plastic and Hand Surgery and the Burns Unit.

First port of call for BG patients
The number of outpatients and inpatients insured through professional associations was further increased in 2005. To further expand and modify the range of services, the Rehab Working Group was established in 2005. One result of its work is interdisciplinary consultation, which makes continued specialised treatment of patients possible in the scope of BG care. The previous special therapeutic rehabilitation for inpatients has also been replaced by an identical service for outpatients. During the day, hand injuries are treated in hospital and the patients concerned stay outside the clinic overnight.
