Department for Hand, Replantation and Microsurgery

The Department for Hand, Replantation and Microsurgery at the Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin is one of the largest care centres for hand surgery in Germany, serving patients from around the country. Led by Professor Dr. med. Andreas Eisenschenk, Secretary of the German Society for Hand Surgery, we have a team of experienced and highly competent doctors. At the Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin, we have doctors on-call 24 hours a day to respond to emergency replantation cases. The department has been certified as a FESSH European Hand Trauma Centre since 2010.

Hand Surgery

We offer the whole surgical spectrum of hand operation.
In keeping with the hospital’s overall aim, we focus on handling acute injuries of the hand and then the follow-up post-treatment.
With 26 beds available, our department responds to every kind of surgery necessary, be they ambulant or stationary, and uses state-of-the-art instruments.

Microsurgery
The term microsurgery comprises surgical procedures for the whole body using optical enlargers like magnifying glasses or operation microscopes. In most reconstructive surgical interventions, microsurgery is required to get the optimal results.

Examples of special microsurgical areas that we focus on:
- Replantations
- Plastic covering of tissue defects of the upper and lower extremities using free flaps
- Toe transplantation to replace fingers
- bridging of large bone defects using free vascularized bone grafts
- Reconstructions following nerve injuries of the lower and upper extremities, including operations on the brachial plexus
- Correcting pediatric malformations

Replantation Surgery

The Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin is a replantation centre. Replantation implies sowing back on parts of the body that have been severed from the main by recommencing the blood flow and making them operative once more, reconnecting them with vital structures (bones, tendons, nerves and skin).

Focus on reconstructive surgery in Plexusparese, Quadriplegia and Cerebral Palsy

The emphasis on reconstructive surgery in Plexusparese, quadriplegia and cerebral palsy in the ukb was founded in early 2010 under the direction of Dr. Böttcher, to be able to offer specialized care in this area. We advise patients with injuries to the plexus, with paraplegia or spastic paralysis due to brain damage. Our team of specialists is also available for patients suffering from paralysis of the peroneal nerve injuries and severe sequelae of compartment syndrome.
