Injuries to the Oral and Maxillofacial Area (Traumatology)
By means of cutting-edge osteosynthesis and atraumatic surgical methods and tissue transplantation, it is possible today for patients to make full recoveries after being badly injured in the facial area of the skull.
Accident or Tumour Related Facial Defects (Plastic Reconstructive Surgery)
Facial fractures that have been badly set can often lead to the facial malformations. With the help of stereolithograhy models and other computer-assisted techniques, we can correct them with plastic reconstructive surgery with the utmost precision. Using transplantations from bones, skin and muscle, we able to reconstruct the face to its original look and feel, sparing our patients the trauma of lasting scarring or malformations of the face or jaw.
Cleft Lip and Palate
The treatment of a child with a cleft lip or palate begins immediately after birth with an early orthodontic treatment. Closing a cleft lip or palate begins while the childis still an infant, so that the any signs of the cleft are invisible to the untrained eye. Nevertheless, it does happen that further operations are needed later on.
Malocclusions (Extreme Malpositions of the Jaw) and Other Craniofacial Malformations
Patients with malocclusions suffer from a disproportion of the upper and lower jaw. The disproportion occurs to such an extent as to make traditional orthodontic surgery inadequate to repair it. Far more often, preliminary orthodontic treatment needs to be supplemented by comprehensive osteotomies (surgical elongations) of the upper as well as lower jaw to get the best functional as well as cosmetic results.
Diseases of the Temporamandibular Joint and Other Functional Problems of the Stomatognathic System
Acute and chronic pain in the temporamandibular joint (TMJ) and masticatory muscles are often accompanied by complaints in the cervical spine, neck and throat muscles, tongue muscles and problems swallowing. They are also manifest in general headaches. The conservative treatment of the TMJ yields the best results when done with precise analysis of the stomatognathic system by incorporating adjusted splints and physiotherapy. We also use arthroscopic investigative methods and, if necessary, open TMJ surgery.
Oral Mucosa Diseases (Lesions)
Changes in the oral mucosa can be harmless, but they often precede oral cavity cancer. That is why it is an exact diagnosis and sometimes the removal of a tissue sample are necessary. Numerous oral mucosa diseases can be carefully treated and removed with the latest laser technology.
Tumour Surgery
The successful treament of benign and malignant tumours in the oral cavity and the salivary glands frequently require the resectioning and reconstruction of essential part of the stomatognathic system like the tongue, upper and lower jaw, including the dependent lymphatics. After their removal, malignant diseases of the facial skin (white cancer malignant melanomas) necessitate reconstruction of the affected facial areas such as the eyelids, cheeks and lips. The treatment of malignant tumours frequently necessitate an interdisciplinary approach. This approach is the topic of an interdisciplinary tumour conference.
Surgery of the Orbita
Surgery of the orbita includes on one hand the reconstruction of the orbital ring in the context of traumatology and plastic reconstructive facial surgery on the other. All other tumours of the orbita are also treated. Doctors are best able to reach their goal when working in cooperation with Augenklinik Marzahn (ophthalmology clinic in Marzahn).
Implants – Preprosthetic Surgery
Thanks to the developments in dental implantology, it is now possible to implant artificial tooth roots (osseointegrated implants) in the jaw and integrate them with the tooth replacement which gives the patient the feeling of regular teeth able to chew normally. With the heavy loss of jawbone, it becomes necessary to create bone formation before any actual implantation. Bone formation is a sensitive procedure, performed with bone replacement material (e.g. sinus floor elevation); occasionally, however, it is necessary to use the patient’s own bone. Furthermore, all operations are performed to improve dentures.
Dental Surgery
Dental surgery involves removing extremely displaced teeth and widespread cysts. These kinds of procedures make partial reconstruction of the affected lower jaw section with bone replacement material or with the patient’s own bone necessary, as in plastic-reconstructive surgery. The microsurgical displacement of the nervus alveolaris inferior in the lower jaw is rarely necessary.
Septic Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Septic oral and maxillofacial surgery treats acute infections of or stemming from the tooth, salivary gland, paranasal sinuses and facial skin.
Difficulty Swallowing (Dysphagia)
Working closesly with the related disciplines (ENT, neurology, surgery, speech therapy), we treat acute and chronic difficulty swallowing with a predominantly conservative approach.
Epithetics
The Clinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is joined to a Centre for Epithetics. Epithetics are artificial facial parts like nose and ears that are attached in cases where surgical reconstruction is either not possible or not wanted.
